Common causes
- Hours at a screen — head forward, shoulders rounded, the neck carrying the load all day
- Stress — tension settles in the upper shoulders (trapezius) almost automatically
- Sleeping position — a pillow too high or too low, or falling asleep on the couch
- Old strains and minor injuries that never fully settled
- Phone posture — looking down for hours adds up over a week
How treatment works on it
- RMT massage — Swedish and Tuina techniques to release the upper back, shoulders and neck muscles, working through trigger points layer by layer rather than just pressing harder
- Acupuncture — points in the neck, shoulders and along the arms to ease pain and muscle guarding; often combined with massage in an integrative session
- Heat therapy — warm salt packs to soften stubborn tension before deeper work
- Honest assessment — I check range of motion and what reproduces your pain, so treatment targets the cause, not just the sore spot
What you can do at home
- Set up your screen — top of the monitor around eye level, feet flat, lower back supported
- Move every 30–45 minutes — stand, roll your shoulders, turn your head gently side to side
- Heat for stiffness — a warm pack on the shoulders for 15–20 minutes in the evening
- Check your pillow — your neck should stay roughly level, not propped or dropped
- Gentle stretching only — never force a stiff neck through sharp pain
When to see a doctor first
Get medical assessment promptly if your neck pain follows an accident or fall, if numbness or weakness in an arm is spreading or worsening, if you have fever with a stiff neck, or if pain comes with unexplained weight loss. These need diagnosis before manual treatment.
This page is general information about how massage therapy and acupuncture may help — not a diagnosis or a promise of outcome. At your first visit I assess your condition before treating; if treatment is not improving things, I will say so honestly and suggest the next step.
