Acupuncture aftercare: what to do after your treatment

For the rest of today

• Take it easier than usual — light activity is fine; scale back strenuous exercise for the rest of the day, and rest if you feel tired or dizzy
• Eat and drink normally — a normal meal is fine; avoid coming in or leaving on a completely empty stomach next time
• Keep the needle points clean — showering as usual is fine; save hot tubs and saunas for tomorrow
• Go easy on alcohol — especially if you feel tired or light-headed afterwards
• If you feel tired or light-headed — this can happen briefly after treatment; rest, and do not drive or operate machinery until you feel fully back to normal

What is normal afterwards

• A small bruise or mild soreness at a needle point — this happens occasionally and usually settles within a few days
• Feeling deeply relaxed, or lightly tired for a few hours
• A brief flare of your symptoms — a small number of people feel temporarily worse for a day or so; let me know if it happens, and seek medical care if it is marked, keeps progressing, or does not settle

When to get in touch

Contact me if you notice increasing pain, swelling or redness that keeps spreading, fever, or anything that worries you — and seek medical care promptly if symptoms feel serious. Chest pain, breathlessness, or pain when breathing after treatment needs urgent medical care — go to emergency or call 911. Reaching out is always welcome; no question is too small.
