Frozen shoulder: how treatment works — from the muscles out

A frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis, often called 五十肩 — "fifty-year shoulder") makes simple things hard: reaching a shelf, fastening a bra, sleeping on that side. The joint capsule tightens, but a large part of the pain and lost movement lives in the muscles around the shoulder — they guard, spasm and stiffen to protect the joint. That muscular layer is exactly what massage, Tuina and acupuncture work on.

What may be going on

Frozen shoulder — or a rotator cuff problem?

These two are easy to confuse, they are treated differently, and telling them apart is part of the first assessment:

When to see a doctor first

See a doctor promptly if the shoulder is hot, red and swollen with fever; if stiffness follows a significant injury; or if there is new weakness after a fall (a tendon tear needs different care). Shoulder-area pain with chest tightness or breathlessness is an emergency — call 911.

This page is general information about how massage therapy and acupuncture may help — not a diagnosis or a promise of outcome. At your first visit I assess your condition before treating; if treatment is not improving things, I will say so honestly and suggest the next step.
