First, the honest part: no massage can push a herniated disc back in, and I will not claim otherwise. What hands-on treatment can do is work on everything around the disc — because when a disc irritates a nerve, the back and hip muscles go into protective spasm, and that spasm, stiffness and guarding account for a large share of the pain people actually feel. Easing the muscular layer often makes the whole picture noticeably more bearable while the body does its slow repair work.
Not a prettier scan. Plenty of people carry a disc bulge that still shows on an MRI and feel completely fine — the finding only matters when it produces symptoms. So the goal here is concrete: relieve the pain and related symptoms, and restore your normal work and daily life. It is the same thinking behind "living well with" a chronic finding — and a core idea in Chinese medicine: when the symptoms are gone and life is back to normal, the problem is resolved, even if an image still shows a trace of it.
Go to emergency care immediately if back or leg pain comes with new bladder or bowel control problems, or numbness in the saddle area (where you would sit on a bike) — these can signal a surgical emergency. Urgent medical assessment is also needed for weakness that is progressing, such as a foot that starts to drag, and after major trauma.
This page is general information about how massage therapy and acupuncture may help — not a diagnosis or a promise of outcome. At your first visit I assess your condition before treating; if treatment is not improving things, I will say so honestly and suggest the next step.
